This course is not delivered on behalf of the RICS. The OXC is an independent training organisation. This course focuses on the responsible use of third-party AI systems, which is the context applicable to RICS-regulated firms. It does not cover Section 5 of the Standard, which relates to the development of AI systems. That is addressed through a separate OXC service. Module content is subject to change as the Standard and associated guidance evolves.

Nigel brings rare depth to the intersection of AI and surveying regulation. He is Professor of Computer Science at the University of Birmingham, teaches on the University of Oxford’s Software Engineering Programme and is Program Director for the UAE National AI Program. He has a longstanding involvement in the RICS having served as Chair of the RICS UK Education Standards Board, on the former RICS General Council and most recently as a member of the RICS Working Group responsible for the current RICS Rules of Conduct.

This course provides a clear, practical introduction to the new Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors AI Professional Standard, which became mandatory in March 2026. It explains what the standard requires, why it matters, and how it applies to regulated surveying practice. This programme is not delivered by the RICS, the Oxford Centre for AI is an independent training organisation.
The programme focuses on helping firms and individuals understand their professional obligations when using AI, and how to demonstrate compliance in a proportionate, defensible way.
